Brandon Nimmo - Chance to be ready for Opening Day Nimmo (ankle/knee) told reporters Sunday that he believe he'll be ready for Opening Day, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Impact Nimmo said he was relieved to be diagnosed with sprains in his right knee and ankle, as it could have been worse. The outfielder jammed both while trying to break up a double play Friday in a Grapefruit League game, but imaging revealed no structural damage. The Mets won't take any risks in the early part of the season, but it does seem likely that Nimmo will be playing games in April for New York, even if he does open the season on the injured list.

Tim Locastro - Goes yard Saturday Locastro went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros.
Impact Getting the start at DH and hitting leadoff, Locastro took Rafael Montero deep in the seventh inning for his first homer of the spring. The 30-year-old speedster has had a very good camp, going 13-for-38 (.342) with six steals in six attempts, and with Brandon Nimmo (ankle) suddenly looking iffy for Opening Day, the Mets might need more outfield depth early in the season, increasing Locastro's chances of landing a spot on the 26-man roster.

Tommy Hunter - Collects save Saturday Hunter gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning during Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros.
Impact The veteran right-hander picked up the save, and while spring saves typically are meaningless -- Houston had no Opening Day starters left in the game by the time Hunter took the mound -- there's increased focus on the Mets' closing situation after the loss of Edwin Diaz (knee). Hunter has seen occasional ninth-inning duties during his 15 seasons in the majors, including a career-high 11 saves for the O's way back in 2014, but David Robertson, Adam Ottavino, Brooks Raley (hamstring), Drew Smith and likely others are well ahead of him in the pecking order to replace Diaz, assuming he even gets added to the 26-man roster. Hunter has had a good spring though, posting a 7:1 K:BB across six scoreless innings, and that might be enough to lock up a low-leverage spot.

Drew Smith - Strong spring continues Smith gave up a hit and a walk while striking out three in a scoreless eighth inning during Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros.
Impact Max Scherzer worked the first seven frames, so manager Buck Showalter may have been hinting at how he plans to use Smith in the regular season by deploying him in this spot. The right-hander was already set to have a fairly significant role in the Mets' bullpen this season, but the injury to Edwin Diaz (knee) bumps everyone else up a rung on the ladder. With at least one of David Robertson and Adam Ottavino moving into the ninth inning, Smith could be one of the team's primary high-leverage right-handers. The 29-year-old recorded a career-high 14 holds in 2022, but he could easily top that number this season. Smith has looked sharp this spring to boot, posting an 8:2 K:BB through five innings while giving up only one run.

Impact Facing a Houston lineup that featured only two big names in Alex Bregman and Jose Abreu, Scherzer appeared to be more than ready for Opening Day. The veteran right-hander has a 14:1 K:BB through 11.2 innings this spring while allowing only one run, and the 38-year-old is showing no signs that his dominance is slipping. Aside from the pandemic season, Scherzer hasn't posted an ERA of 3.00 or higher since 2014, and he's delivered a sub-1.00 WHIP in six of the last eight campaigns.
